A hospital in York has signed an Energy Performance Contract (EPC) in the hope of savings millions of pounds on its energy bills.

The £4.6 million Energy Centre at York Teaching Hospital includes a combined heat and power plant (CHP) installed by Vital Energi.

The company has guaranteed savings worth £12.7 million through the EPC as well as 45,000 tonnes of carbon emissions reduction during its 15-year lifecycle.

That’s more than £800,000 of savings every year – or a 26% cut on its current energy bills and operating costs.

Brian Golding, Director of Estates at the NHS said: “As an organisation, we are very much aware of sustainability issues and are committed to reducing our environmental impact. Our sustainable development group ensures we are consistently addressing energy consumption across all our hospitals, looking at everything from light bulbs through to the design of new buildings.”

The NHS is trying to cut its energy spend and become more sustainable, with its Sustainability Day taking place next week.
