Costa Rica’s first football stadium powered by solar panels is now fully operational.

The array at Alejandro Morera Soto Stadium has a capacity of 260KW and will generate around 400,000kWh per year.

That is expected to help the stadium save $148,000 (£94,720) in electricity costs annually, according to La Liga Deportiva Alajuelense football club.

The solar panels will meet 100% of the stadium’s electricity needs both in normal daily operations and peak demand during game days.

The project was developed by ABB and Enertiva Energia Alternativa.

Alejandro Brenes, CEO of Enertiva Costa Rica said: “With the solar installation, La Liga Deportiva Alajuelense showcases their commitment to the environment in general and in particular for electricity generation from sustainable solar energy in particular. Examples like this can reach the sports fans as well and generate more awareness for these solutions.”
