Solar-powered benches which re-charge mobile devices have been installed in Canary Wharf, London.

The ‘Strawberry Smart Benches’ also track air quality and noise levels and include an emergency call button linked to the Canary Wharf Help Estate Centre.

They are located at Jubilee Park, Cabot Square, Westferry Circus and in front of Crossrail Station and are a “world first”, the company claims.

The launch is the first in a roll-out across London and the UK.

Miloš Milisavljević, CEO and founder of Strawberry energy, said: “We are in negotiations with real estate companies and boroughs in London so we expect at least 10 more smart benches like these will be on service to Londoners until the end of this year.”

Earlier this year an Indian airport became the world’s first to be solar powered.
