UK Energy Minister Andrea Leadsom insists the policy changes the Tories have made will help “tackle the energy trilemma”.

She kicked off the Energy Live 2015 Conference in London today highlighting that every decision the government makes is to keep the lights on, decarbonise the sector and reduce bills for consumers.

Ms Leadsom added despite the Conservatives reducing subsidies for renewables, they will continue to support green energy sources and insisted the renewable sector is a “very expanding industry”.

On the new Hinkley nuclear power plant she said it is “very good value, low carbon, reliable and very important for the UK’s energy security”.

However former Energy Secretary Ed Davey said the Conservative Party “doesn’t know what they want… They’re just making it up as they go along”.

He added the government is “making stupid policies” and the Levy Control Framework being overspent is “one big lie” to justify renewable cuts.

Speaking to ELN Editor Sumit Bose, Mr Davey said he didn’t support nuclear when he was at DECC because of the economics.

The day was jampacked with debates, seminars and case studies with hundreds of energy end users, suppliers and experts from the industry networking and talking about current energy policies and what they want from government.
