Smart meters are a “key” incentive for customers to switch their energy suppliers.

That was the message from industry experts at an event which talked about consumer engagement in the UK energy market.

According to Gillian Cooper, Head of Retail Energy Markets at Citizens Advice, smart meters are providing customers with accurate bills as well as changing their behaviour around switching suppliers.

She added “the next few years will be exciting” for energy switching as it is now easy to move to a different supplier.

However there are still “barriers” the CMA has found and solutions are needed to address the “problematic” perception customers have and the time it takes for them to switch, said Adam Collinson, Partner in Competition, EU and Regulatory at Eversheds.

The government has pledged to reduce switching times to 24 hours by 2018.

They were speaking at a seminar hosted by the Westminster Energy, Environment and Transport Forum yesterday.
