A UK engineering consultancy has bought the services division of an international nuclear engineering company for $318 million (£210m).

As part of the agreement, Atkins’ purchase includes EnergySolutions’ North American, European and Asian businesses.

It will hire around 650 employees from the latter firm as part of the agreement.

Atkins helps maintain the UK’s roads and railways and has also been building up its nuclear business.

CEO Uwe Krueger said: “This acquisition accelerates our nuclear strategy and creates a global platform. Our combined business is well positioned in all the major nuclear markets in North America, UK, Europe, Middle East and Asia Pacific… We are also acquiring innovative technologies that are a key differentiator in the growing and profitable nuclear market.”

The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to close in the first quarter of 2016.
