Chile has set a target to produce 70% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2050.

That’s part of the country’s new strategy to improve the sector and reduce blackouts.

Under the ‘Energy 2050’ programme, new buildings will also be 100% energy efficient, with control systems for power consumption installed.

Chile’s President Michelle Bachelet said: “Chile is a mature country with a capacity to face big challenges. We are capable of making the necessary changes to difficult situations to make the nation stronger. As government, we must act and think long term and do what is necessary today to have a better future tomorrow.”
