A new flexibility service to help balance renewable generation has been launched by DONG Energy.
The Renewable Balancing Reserve service works by offsetting drops in wind strength with its business customers’ demand.
DONG Energy will invite large business customers to adjust their energy usage by either turning down consumption or increasing on-site productions in a bid to manage intermittency of green sources.
It expects the initiative to help keep the system balanced and reduce the need to call on conventional or more expensive generation sources to fill the power gap.
Its customers can choose if they wish to participate, without commitment, during any half-hourly period throughout the year.
Jeff Whittingham, Managing Director of DONG Energy Sales UK said: “DONG Energy is investing in the development of new commercial solutions to balance an intermittent generation portfolio whilst helping businesses to use their flexibility to create value.
“Renewable Balancing Reserve is different, provides businesses with an alternative way to reduce costs and create new revenue, without the risk of penalties or restrictive schedules.”
Last week the company confirmed plans to build the world’s largest offshore wind farm in the UK.
