The UK power system has opened comfortable, according to npower’s daily market report.

The peak margin is above 13GW.

Wind is generating 3.5GW, 13% of the stack.

CCGTs are providing 41% of the stack while coal 18%.

The French and Dutch interconnectors are importing at full capacity.

The gas system has opened 26mcm short.

Alex Guiot from the Optimisation Desk said: “The cold snap has certainly pushed demand up, currently forecast at 327mcm versus a seasonal normal of just 283mcm. The vast proportion of this is from domestic heating demand but there is also strong demand from CCGTs.

“On the storage side Rough is nominating less than total capacity so far. We could expect Hornsea and Humbly Grove to react to balance the system.”

Brent oil is currently trading at $33/bbl (£23.44/bbl).
