India has announced a scheme to connect 1GW of wind power to the grid.

The government is proposing to auction the capacity to wind energy developers in the country.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy states: “The scheme will encourage competitiveness through scaling up of project sizes and introduction of efficient and transparent e-bidding and e-auctioning processes. It will also facilitate fulfilment of Non-Solar Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) requirement of non-windy states.”

It is part of the government’s aim to install 175GW of renewable energy by 2022, out of which 60GW has to come from wind.

The current wind capacity installed in India is nearly 26.7GW, sharing around 9% of total capacity.
