A new tool allows users to calculate how much money they are spending on energy each second.

The Real-Time Energy Calculator calculates this by asking customers to input information about what electrical appliances they have turned on, ranging from light bulbs and televisions to washing machines and microwaves.

Researchers at Go Compare found the average wattage and hourly cost of each item included and then used this to design the calculator.

It’s hoped that the tool will encourage UK consumers to cut down on energy usage by turning off electrical components that aren’t being used.
