Most people in England now use their own bags when they go shopping.

A report by Cardiff University revealed only one in 10 shoppers use plastic bags since the 5p charge was implemented.

It surveyed people in England, Wales and Scotland before and after the new rule was introduced.

Before the charge, 70% of respondents from England said they often took their own shopping bags.

That number increased to 83% one month after the charge and to 93% six months later.

Before the introduction of the charge, 76% of respondents from England agreed it would encourage people to use fewer plastic bags which rose to 80% six months after it was introduced.

The research also found the level of support for the charge across England, Scotland and Wales increased from 52% before the charge was introduced to 62% six months after it came into place.
