Leading businesses say policies need to better enable them to go 100% green and hit climate change targets.

A new report from the RE100 says policy makers should give firms priority access to renewables, set ambitious targets and push for the transformational changes that are needed to help companies meet their power needs in a green way.

The RE100 is a global initiative of companies led by The Climate Group committed to getting all of their energy used for operations from renewable sources as soon as possible. The group includes firms such as BT, Starbucks and Google.

The report comes out as the EU prepares to release a renewable review for winter, which reportedly includes backtracks on green energy and subsidies on fossil fuels.

The RE100 argue that companies need better access to renewables to give them greater control over energy costs and long-term stability. This would in turn allow them to better support the collective EU 27% renewables by 2030 target.

Damian Ryan, Acting CEO at The Climate Group, said: “More companies than ever before are committed to bold climate action because it makes business sense. But to ensure that many more are able to reach 100% renewable power, governments at all levels need to set or raise the ambition of long-term supportive policies. The Climate Group wants to help to drive practical solutions that will unlock much-needed low carbon investment to deliver a prosperous, zero-emissions economy.”
