The UK has tied with Italy in 10th place in a table ranking the top recyclers in Europe.

According to figures from Eurostat for 2015, the two nations’ recycling and composting waste stood at 43.5%.

That was down from 43.7% for the UK.

Germany retained its top stop at the league table, with an overall score of 66.1%, a slight improvement on its previous performance, while Austria stood in second place with a rate of 56%.

They were followed by Slovenia, Belgium, Switzerland, Netherlands, Sweden and Denmark.

The amount of municipal waste generated per person in the EU in 2015 amounted to 477kg.

That’s slightly up, for the first time since 2007, from the 474kg recorded in 2014.

Last week members of the European Parliament (MEPs) voted in favour of a more ambitious recycling target.
