Sweden, Mexico and Canada have joined an international group to drive ambitious climate action.

The Under2 Coalition, of which The Climate Group acts as Secretariat, is an alliance of 170 global jurisdictions, spanning six continents and 33 countries.

Member nations already include Costa Rica, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands.

Together they are committed to driving ambitious climate action, with the goal of limiting rising global temperatures to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels by 2050.

Helen Clarkson, CEO of The Climate Group, said: “The Under2 Coalition provides an unprecedented opportunity for jurisdictions from all over the world to come together and scale up innovative policy solutions to tackle climate change.

“We welcome the endorsements of Sweden, Mexico and Canada to the Coalition, which is an invaluable tool to position them at the forefront of driving sustainable and prosperous economies.”

She added the “advantages of a climate-smart society are so huge” in terms of health, job creation and energy security.

Last year Sweden committed to phasing out greenhouse gas emissions by 2045, one of the most ambitious climate plans among developed nations.
