A renewable energy company has signed a £1 billion partnership with an investment management firm.

Lightsource and BlackRock have entered into a strategic partnership to target the acquisition and ownership of around 1GW of UK solar energy assets.

The partnership, called Kingfisher, will initially incldue 25 of Lightsource’s solar assets with an installed capacity of 156MW.

It plans to add a further 50MW of assets in Northern Ireland in the coming months and aims to make a series of larger investments in operational utility-scale solar facilities over a three-year period.

Lightsource will provide long term operations and asset management services for the investment platform, building on its experience as it provides these services for 1.9GW of renewable sites in the UK.

Rory O’Connor, Managing Director and Head of Renewable Power for Europe at BlackRock, said: “Over the last two years, we have invested in more than 20 solar projects in the UK representing nearly 150MW of capacity on behalf of our clients and we believe this market continues to present attractive opportunities for institutional investors.”
