Toyota is offering to pay drivers up to £4,000 to trade in old petrol and diesel vehicles for a new model.

The scrappage scheme, which will run until 31st December, is open to any Toyota vehicle more than seven years old and in customer ownership for a minimum of six months.

It is part of the car manufacturer’s efforts to encourage drivers to trade polluting cars for a cleaner one.

However, customers will not be obliged to buy a hybrid or electric car though it states its newer diesel and petrol models are significantly cleaner than older ones.

Paul Van der Burgh, Toyota GB President and Managing Director said: “Our scrappage scheme is a win-win solution. Motorists can dispose of their older vehicles and have access to our cleaner, more efficient model range.

“Our world-leading petrol-electric hybrids will be an ideal choice, helping make a genuine contribution to protecting air quality – a crucial concern for today’s customers.”

Earlier this month, Ford also launched a scrappage scheme offering £2,000 off a new petrol or diesel car.
