Researchers from the UK and China are to develop the next generation of offshore renewable energy (ORE) technologies.

They will collaborate on five projects using environmental science and engineering to tackle key challenges affecting the development of ORE systems.

That includes offshore wind, wave and tidal facilities.

The projects will determine where the best energy resource is available and where to implement ORE technologies as well as inform the development of technology so structures are resilient to extreme events such as typhoons and earthquakes.

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) are providing nearly £4 million of funding.
