Refgas has spent 10 years perfecting a modular, transportable solution, aimed at industrial and commercial businesses which depend upon security of supply and stable costs for their electricity, heat and cooling.
We hear about traditional coal-fired power stations being decommissioned, indecisions about their replacement and whilst there are exciting developments in wind and solar technologies, these are part-time generating solutions, often incompatible with full-time industrial processes and CHP demand.
Refgas’ units, which looks like oversized stand-by generator sets, use feedstock from the locality – waste wood, fuels derived from household refuse and they also allow for the possibility of using industry’s own solid, combustible, process wastes and residues in many cases.
The patented Refgas process turns these waste materials into an ultra clean non-waste gas, known as syngas. This in turn powers a standard reciprocating gas engine and generator and it’s much much cleaner than diesel. In fact, Refgas has had to prove to the authorities that it’s even cleaner than natural gas!
In the UK alone, we generate 30 million tonnes of municipal waste per year and a similar volume of industrial and commercial wastes – so we’re not likely to run out fuel anytime soon!
OK… What’s the catch?
There’s a cost for the technology, of course and there’s a cost for running and maintaining it. Refgas provides options to sell its system to you and train your team or manage the O&M itself. In some cases, via its partners, Refgas can provide a fully funded Build Own Operate solution, where you just plug in and contract to buy the heat and power.
What if we don’t use all the power?
Don’t worry, the surplus can be exported to the grid and you can generate additional revenues.
But the really neat thing is you get paid to receive your fuel. Rather than paying transport costs, landfill tax and disposal fees, which can total upwards of £100 per tonne, waste producers and waste management companies all want cheaper, sustainable solutions, on their doorstep. Refgas sorts all that out, tying in feedstock contracts for the duration of your project and giving you guaranteed power and potentially massive cost savings.

The Refgas units are modular, each generating 1MW electricity and 1.4MW heat per hour, from one tonne of feedstock.
