Indian companies obliged to use more renewable energy

Businesses must meet renewable purchase obligations (RPO) targets of 21% by 2022

The Government of India is pushing large power consumers to increase the use of renewable energy.

The Ministry of Power has updated its renewable purchase obligations (RPO) targets from 17% in the current year to 21% in 2022.

Under the new rules, businesses must generate 10.5% of their total energy from solar and non-solar sources equally by the year 2022.

It is part of the Government’s climate target to achieve 175,000MW of renewable capacity by March 2022.

The obligations are part of the Electricity Act 2003 and apply to the total electricity consumption by an energy consumer or producer, excluding consumption met by hydropower.
