UK’s ‘largest’ battery storage facility completed

Located near the town of Bishop’s Stortford, it has a total capacity of 49.9MW

A battery storage facility claimed to be the largest in the UK has been completed.

It has a total capacity of 49.9MW and is located at Stocking Pelham near the town of Bishop’s Stortford, according to developer BSR EPC.

The facility, which consists of 27 inverters and 150,000 lithium-ion battery cells, is connected to a nearby 400kV substation via a 132kV grid connection.

It has been built for Statera Energy and uses SMA Sunbelt Energy’s E-house design, which houses batteries and other equipment in custom-built prefabricated buildings.

The company claims it reduces the site’s footprint by up to 50% in comparison to designs using shipping containers.

Tim Humpage, BSR’s Head of Engineering, Procurement and Construction said: “Renewables are meeting more and more of our energy needs and projects like this have the power to turbo-charge this trend as batteries have the ability to balance supply and demand.

Energy storage facilities such as this will play an essential part of the transition to a low carbon environment in the coming years”
