Liverpool aims to be climate positive by 2020 using blockchain tech

The council has signed an agreement with Poseidon to trial its platform over the next 12 months to offset its carbon impact

Liverpool has announced its ambition to become the first climate positive city in the world by 2020.

The council has signed a new partnership with Poseidon to trial its blockchain platform over the next 12 months to offset the carbon impact of its products and services in the city by supporting forest conservation projects.

The platform tracks, manages and connects consumers and retailers with forest conservation projects around the world – an open source register will facilitate online dealings for the offsetting credits.

More than 110% of the council’s emissions are to be rebalanced using the innovative technology, with Liverpool also aiming to become the first climate positive local authority by the end of 2018.

Poseidon will work with local schools, universities and businesses to develop educational programmes around climate impact to support the council’s commitment to reduce its carbon emissions by 40% by 2030.

Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson said: “I’m delighted we have signed this partnership agreement with Poseidon to connect Liverpool directly with climate positive projects across the globe.

“Poseidon’s technology is the first of its kind to truly deliver a solution to governments, businesses and individuals around the world to help reverse the causes of climate change and I am thrilled this agreement will bring this cutting-edge technology to our city.”
