The panels on the roof of the RETAL factory cost around €1 million to install

Solar panels being installed

A Lithuanian packaging producer has completed a 1.4MW solar project on the roof of its factory in Lentvaris, Lithuania.

The installation on the RETAL factory is claimed to be the largest solar panel rooftop installation in the Baltic States.

Worth more than €1 million (£880,000), the panels were installed by I+D Energias Lithuania, a partner of Sun Investment Group (SIG).

RETAL, a manufacturer of sustainable plastic packaging, will now adopt renewable energy as their main source of electricity

Lithuania is one of the few EU member states to have already met its 2020 renewable energy targets dictating that a fifth of all energy must be generated from renewable sources.

Marius Skuodis, Lithuania’s Vice Minister of the Economy, said: “We are currently looking to attract electricity-heavy industries to Lithuania and we have noticed that many of these types of companies are very concerned regarding the price of electricity and the opportunity to source it from renewables.

“Furthermore, the issue of climate change is equally important for the development of Lithuania’s economy as is energy efficiency, reducing electricity prices and the high added value job creation that comes alongside these.”
