Government urged to ‘act fast’ to protect households as energy bills soar

Households will pay an extra £136 a month with current energy price forecasts from April if the government does not step in, new report suggests

Economic experts have urged whoever might be the next occupant of Number 10 to set out immediately the government‘s plan to protect households with rising energy bills from April 2023.

The latest report by the Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr) suggests a priority will need to be working on a solution to shield the most vulnerable households from further increases in energy prices next year.

Consultants have already warned that without the Energy Price Guarantee, the average household could face annual energy costs of up to £4,350.

Cebr analysts have estimated that an unmitigated increase in energy bills would knock a further £136 off the average monthly household budget.

Their data modelling shows that all but the highest-earning 40% of British households across the UK would have negative available incomes by the second quarter of 2023.
