The Crown Estate is helping create 200 new sustainable homes.
It has partnered with three companies; gs8, TOWN and igloo Regeneration, to deliver housing demonstration projects in Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Cheshire.
The projects target high sustainability standards, including carbon levels below 300kg CO₂/m², operational energy use of 35kWh/m²/year and 15% biodiversity net gain.
Building firm gs8 will construct net-zero homes in Bedfordshire, TOWN will create community-focused housing in Hertfordshire and igloo will lead low-carbon development in Cheshire.
Lessons learned will shape future housing strategies.
Rob Chesworth, Head of Strategic Land at The Crown Estate, said: “The UK’s housing sector desperately needs more innovation if it is to deliver the quality, affordable homes that the current and future UK population needs.
“These housing demonstration projects are an opportunity for us to test innovative approaches to sustainable design and help us understand how to scale up across the country.
“We are confident that we can play a key role in addressing some of the UK’s significant housing and environmental challenges, while setting new standards for the development of thriving, sustainable communities.”
