SSE to build biofuel plant in Ireland

Plant will help support Ireland’s energy security in a renewables-led system

SSE Thermal has announced a €300m investment to build the 300MW Tarbert Next Generation Power Station in Ireland.

It will run on 100% sustainable biofuels with the potential to transition to hydrogen. Construction is set to be completed by late 2027, supporting Ireland’s energy security and decarbonisation goals.

The plant will use Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) sourced from waste feedstocks and meet EU sustainability requirements.

The project follows the closure of the original Tarbert plant in 2023 and complements SSE’s 150MW Temporary Emergency Generation at the site.

Finlay McCutcheon, Managing Director of SSE Thermal, said: “This is a landmark moment for Tarbert, which has a proud history of energy generation dating back almost six decades. In taking this final investment decision, we are underlining our commitment to delivering the next generation of power at the site, supporting Ireland’s electricity system and laying the foundations for a low-carbon future.

“At the same time, we hope to see the new Government in Ireland bring forward the enduring low-carbon solutions needed to support the country’s net zero goals.”
