A new report launched at the Senedd outlines a bold vision for Wales’ renewable energy future, warning that only the most ambitious pathway will unlock its full economic and environmental potential.
“Unleashing the Full Value of Welsh Renewables” – published by RenewableUK Cymru, Solar Energy UK and Marine Energy Wales – sets out the economic, social and environmental benefits of scaling up renewable energy to 2035.
Developed with BiGGAR Economics, it models three scenarios and calls for the adoption of the most ambitious, “Maximising Renewables” path.
Under this scenario, Wales could reach 17.9GW of installed renewable capacity, attract £46.9 billion in private investment and support nearly 8,000 high-skilled jobs with salaries 26% above the Welsh average.
The report also projects almost £2 billion in tax revenue, £183 million in community benefit funds and a 13 million tonne reduction in CO2 emissions by 2035.
Jessica Hooper, Director of RenewableUK Cymru, said: “The analysis makes clear that only by pursuing the most ambitious pathway can Wales fully realise the economic and societal benefits on offer. This isn’t just another report — it’s a call to action.”
First Minister Eluned Morgan backed the report’s findings, adding: “Scaling up renewables is not just about hitting climate targets, it is a major economic opportunity for Wales… With the right policies, investment and political will, Wales can lead, and we intend to.”
The report also shows renewables align with 86% of the national well-being indicators under the Well-being of Future Generations Act.
It urges the Welsh Government to set clear deployment targets and develop a Renewables Sector Deal to secure the full opportunity.
