A £5.2 million solar farm claimed to be the first to be owned by a council has been switched on.

Located on 25 acres of West Sussex County Council’s land near Chichester, the 5MW Tangmere solar farm is expected to generate enough electricity to power 1,500 homes.

The council is setting up a power purchase agreement to use some of the electricity to power its corporate buildings, helping reduce its energy bills.

Louise Goldsmith, Leader of West Sussex County Council said: “This is a great example of local authorities taking a lead on innovative, sustainable developments that make economic sense and benefit our residents.”

Planning permission for the solar farm has been granted for 25 years after which the site will be returned to its natural state.
