Tesla has unveiled a new concept of integrating solar technology into homes.

Its CEO Elon Musk revealed solar roof tiles made of glass that can be manufactured in a range of different styles.

The energy generated by the tiles would be stored in its big home battery ‘Powerwall’ which would deliver clean electricity when the sun is not shinning.

According to Mr Musk, the cost of these kind of rooftop would be less than the cost of a normal one with solar panels.

He added: “There’s about 45 million new roofs in the US a year and I think 20 times that number worldwide so we can imagine over time as people replace their solar roofs the whole neighborhood, everyone would have solar. Why wouldn’t you? Over time every house would become a solar house.

“This is sort of an integrated future. You’ve got an electric car, a powerwall and a solar roof. The key is it needs to be beautiful, affordable and seamlessly integrated.”

The rollout of the product is expected next year.

Earlier this year, the company announced plans to buy clean energy company SolarCity.

Renewables will be part of the discussions at the Energy Live 2016 conference in London on Thursday. Join in the debate using #EL2016.
