Solar sparks life into food market

London's largest rooftop solar installation could cut carbon emissions by 225 tonnes each year

The New Spitalfields Market in London is now home to the largest rooftop solar installation in the city.

The deployment was part of a major renewable energy project at the Leyton wholesale market.

As part of a third phase of works to decarbonise the City of London Corporation’s estate, 2,730 solar panels were installed across five roofs, including the main market hall and four ancillary buildings.

It is expected to deliver a total output of 1.27 GWh of electricity annually, which is enough to power around 470 homes. This also cuts carbon emissions by around 225 tonnes each year.

Mark Wheatley, Chairman of the City of London Corporation Markets Board, said: “New Spitalfields Market is a vital part of London’s fresh produce supply chain, serving businesses and communities across the capital every day.

“This investment helps ensure the market remains a modern, efficient and well-equipped facility, supporting traders and customers while strengthening its long-term future.”

The approximate £2.5 million investment forms part of the City Corporation’s Climate Action Strategy, which commits the organisation to achieving net zero across its own operations by 2027.
