SSE has become the only major supplier to offer its cheapest energy tariff to prepayment meter (PPM) customers.

That means householders who pay for their energy using a PPM can now choose the supplier’s ‘Discounted Energy April 2015’ fixed-term tariff, which is a 2% discount off the standard variable rate for a fixed term.

SSE has predicted the deal could help the average PPM customer save up to £23 a year. The move is part of the firm’s Building Trust campaign, which includes a set of 20 commitments designed to improve the energy market for customers.

Tony Keeling, Director of Customer Service at SSE said: “We are proud to be leading the industry once again by giving our prepayment meter customers access to the best deals, living up to the commitment we made in April. For too long, PPM customers have had their choice restricted by the way in which they pay for the energy they need. Now, paying through a PPM will be able to sign up to the best tariff as well as giving them greater control over their expenditure.”

SSE claims around 6.5 million people in the UK buy their energy through a PPM and 1.1 million are SSE customers.
