Gizmos and gadgets could soon be bumped off Christmas lists across the USA – by energy. One utility firm in the States is offering certificates for the “Gift of Energy” in time for the festive season. The gifts are available in amounts of $10, $20, $25 and $50.

Consumers Energy, which provides gas and electricity to 6.8 million residents in the state of Michigan, said that charities and emergency service groups such as fire departments often bought multiple certificates for “neighbours in need”.

Doug Detterman, manager of small customer care for Consumers Energy said: “There are few gifts more helpful than the gift of a warm home. Buying a Gift of Energy certificate for someone in need is truly a heart-warming act this time of year.”
