The White House has completed installing solar panels on its roofs, the retrofit plans initially announced in 2010 by President Barack Obama.

Although it is not known how many panels have been installed, reports claim they are expected to generate 5.3KW of renewable electricity to power the residence.

The size of the installation is said to be the “typical size for the average American house”, with everything from the solar components to the inverter technologies and the labour all locally-sourced.

Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz said the White House initiative is a “really important message that solar is here, we are doing it and we can do a lot more”.

He added: “I am very bullish on the future of solar energy as a key part of our clean energy future.

“Clean energy revolution is not something for the distant future. It’s happening right now and we can to capture that.”
