A new power line that connects France and Spain has been completed.

The Baixàs electricity link will double the existing interconnection capacity between France and Spain to 2,800MW.

The 64.5-kilometre long interconnector also helps connect the power system of the Iberian Peninsula to other European energy markets.

Completion of the project is part of a bigger plan to build an “Energy Union” by connecting more energy markets across Europe, said the European Commission.

The power line connects the towns of Baixàs in the Rosellón, France and Santa Llogaia in Alto Ampurdán, Spain.

Vice-President for Energy Union Maroš Šefčovič said: “By connecting our member states and energy markets, we will be stronger together. We will be less dependent, more competitive and we will manage the transition to a low carbon economy. We need many more examples like this all over Europe.”
