The Solomon Islands is increasing its electricity production from renewables.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will help the country build a hydropower plant and also invest in solar power.

It will also provide training to operate the hydropower plants.

Anthony Maxwell, Senior Energy Specialist in ADB’s Pacific Department said: “The ADB-supported Solomon Islands Provincial Renewable Energy Project will construct the Fiu River Hydropower Plant near Auki, Malaita and extend the existing power grid to new households.”

The ADB said its energy investments in the Pacific region will exceed $500 million ( £315m) by 2016.
