E.ON has launched an energy efficiency and price comparison tool for household appliances.

E.ON Marketplace aims to help shoppers make better informed decisions when buying energy intensive items like fridges and freezers, washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, lighting and TVs.

It shows a wide range of products and directs users to big online retailers if they click buy. It’s free and available to anyone, regardless of their energy supplier.

The tool gives appliances an energy rating out of 100 and details the “clear cost” of products – a total of the purchase price and the cost of energy consumption throughout its expected lifetime.

Consumers can enter details about their own usage patterns and tariff details to get the most accurate prediction.

David Bird, Managing Director of E.ON Residential, said: “When shopping around for new white goods, TVs or lighting, it’s useful to look beyond the initial outlay to work out the true cost.

“E.ON Marketplace is the first and only service of its kind in the UK and it enables people to get a personalised, transparent prediction of how much energy a product will be using in their own home before they make their final purchasing decision.”

Around 65% of UK appliance shoppers now feel that energy efficiency information is an important influence in their decision to buy.
