An independent energy supplier is to provide an electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure firm with 100% renewable electricity for its charging network.

The new partnership between British firms OVO Energy and Chargemaster will see the creation of the ‘EV Everywhere’ tariff, which bundles clean household energy with free membership to the POLAR network of more than 5,000 charge points throughout the country.

OVO Energy will also begin to introduce its VNet smart technology across the network, enabling customers’ electric vehicles to function as mobile batteries at home and on-the-go, balance renewable energy on the grid and allow drivers to sell back unused energy.

To accelerate the transition to smart charging, the supplier has also acquired charge point specialists ChargedEV and component and services supplier Indra Renewable Technologies.

It aims to use their expertise, combined with Chargemaster’s, to develop its own smart charger, due for release later in the year.

David Martell, CEO of Chargemaster, said: “We very pleased that OVO Energy has joined us as the exclusive energy supplier for our POLAR network.

“Through our partnership, we look to accelerate the growth of our network with the ability to offer 100% green energy and smart charging capabilities to our charge points across the country.”

ENGIE has pledged to invest £600,000 to start switching to a fleet of EVs in the UK.
