Paul Spence appointed chair of Energy UK’s vulnerability commitment

Ex-EDF veteran will now help consumers struggling with debt and health issues

Paul Spence, a veteran of the energy industry, has been named the new independent Chair of Energy UK’s Vulnerability Commitment.

The scheme encourages energy suppliers to go beyond regulatory requirements in supporting vulnerable customers, aligning with the UK’s broader goals for a sustainable and inclusive energy transition.

Developed in consultation with suppliers, consumer groups and regulators, the Vulnerability Commitment covers over 95% of the domestic energy market.

It focuses on aiming to identify and assist customers facing challenges, including financial hardship and health-related vulnerabilities.

Mr Spence who worked for EDF for several decades said: “It’s a great opportunity to identify the extra steps and improve the support energy suppliers give to customers in vulnerable situations. Companies, charities, regulators and policymakers need to work closely together to innovate and improve the support to customers facing these challenges.”

Under the Commitment, suppliers are recognised for using data to identify customers in need, increasing training and deploying specialist teams and partnering with charities to provide holistic support.
