Six people have reportedly been “seriously injured” when a power transformer exploded in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

According to reports, angry farmers from Patwari village in Greater Noida, where the transformer was located, blocked traffic in protest while police lodged a complaint against distribution company Discom.

Brijesh Kumar, Greater Noida Samajwadi Party, a regional political party in India told reporters: “The transformer suddenly exploded in the early hours when people were sleeping on their terraces. Nearly half a dozen people were injured when the hot oil from it fell on them.”

One is believed to be in critical condition and is being treated in a hospital.

Last month a heatwave across India led to electricity cuts and violent protests against power companies.
