Small businesses engaging with the energy market can help keep prices competitive, according to the Business and Energy Minister Michael Fallon.

Speaking at npower’s annual Energy Debate in London yesterday, the minister said: “I know from my work in the department of Business (BIS) that higher energy bills are hitting businesses hard. Competition is the key to keeping prices competitive.”

He called for small businesses to become more engaged in the market: “Although there is more competition in the business energy market than there is in the domestic market, we need to see greater engagement too.”

Mr Fallon added reforms would encourage this: “Ofgem’s non-domestic retail market review proposals will provide greater protection and clearer information to small business customers to help them engage in the market.”

Firmly toeing the low carbon line, he said the energy we use “must not be just be cheaper energy, it must be cleaner”.
