The UK could be heading towards setting a new solar record today.

The control room at National Grid said it is “expecting very high solar output today, in excess of 8GW”.

The previous record was set on the 10th of May this year, when solar generation stood at 8.4GW.

Average power generated in the half hour period up to 11am today stood at 8.19GW.

The Met Office tweeted: “With plenty of sunshine around this afternoon, it’s going to be another scorcher with temps up a little on yesterday for many.”

If the record is broken today, it will be the latest in a string of green power generation landmarks in the last few months.
