Nearly 45% of off grid businesses unlikely go green

New BEIS research suggests just 5% of non-domestic customers in off-gas grid areas in England and Wales have installed a heat pump

Almost 45% of non-domestic consumers (NDCs) in areas not connected to the gas grid in England and Wales, are unlikely to install a low carbon heating system if their current one fails.

That’s according to BEIS research looking into the attitudes of non-domestic customers in these areas. It also shows which just 5% of NDCs have currently a heat pump installed.

The survey of more than 300 energy and heating decision-makers of organisations shows more than a third would be likely to consider installing a low carbon heating technology if their current system did not work properly.

Nearly 71% of the respondents cited the environment as the reason for considering the installation of a low carbon heating system.

The government aims to phase out the fossil fuel heating installations in new and existing buildings off the gas grid in the 2020s.

According to official stats, there are approximately 1.65 million non-domestic buildings in England and Wales.

Of these nearly 280,000 are located in areas not linked to the gas grid and many of these use fossil fuels, including oil, liquefied petroleum gas and coal to heat their properties.
