EU chief at COP27: “Let us not take the highway to hell”

The President of the European Commission has urged countries to accelerate action on climate change

European Commission President has said countries need to accelerate their climate action to achieve their goals and boost energy security.

Speaking at the COP27 climate summit in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, Ursula von der Leyen said: “Let us not take the highway to hell, but earn our clean ticket to heaven. That is our responsibility. For Europe, the answer is REPowerEU.

“We are not just cutting our dependence on Russian fossil fuels. That is good, but it is not enough.

“We are massively accelerating the rollout of renewables. If we accelerate and scale up we can in the next year meet a new all-time record of over 100GW of additional renewable capacity because we know that every kilowatt hour of electricity that we generate from renewable sources like solar, wind and green hydrogen is not only good for our climate but also good for our independence and our security of supply.”
