The European Commission confirmed State Aid approval for the UK’s Green Deal scheme and said it could provide up to £600 million of public support.

In a statement, the Commission said the UK Government’s energy efficiency policy “is in line with EU state aid rules” and could make a “significant contribution” to the EU’s common objective of improving energy efficiency.

Commission Vice President Joaquín Almunia said: “The UK Green Deal allows consumers and businesses to improve the energy efficiency of their buildings without making huge upfront investments. This is another example of how our policy of state aid control can support private investment in energy saving and enhance competition at the same time.”

The Green Deal offers energy efficiency investments to householders which is paid for by the savings from lower energy bills.
