The former CEO of npower Volker Beckers has joined Energy Live News (ELN) as Chairman.

Mr Beckers, who was the Chief Executive of npower from January 2010 to December 2012, brings with him a whole range of expertise in business which will help ELN grow and explore new avenues.

Whilst at the Big Six company, he successfully oversaw substantial investment in the UK generation fleet, with the completion of two efficient gas-fired power stations – Staythorpe and Pembroke – as well as its customer service platform and the sale of Horizon Nuclear Power.

He then joined HM Revenue & Customs as Non-Executive Director between January 2013 and March 2015.

Mr Beckers is currently the Non-Executive Director at the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority as well as Non-Executive Chairman at Reactive Technologies and Albion Community Power, where he’s drumming up investments of £100 million of green projects.

When asked about why he chose ELN, Mr Beckers added: “You are still and you always were, open for change. And I can’t imagine anybody else being that open and wanting to drive that change – and that’s one element.

“The second one is certainly what I’ve seen over the past years, where you have started to establish now one of the biggest energy conferences, where you’ve brought together experienced individuals in your more bespoke conferences.

“And I’ve seen you mentoring and coaching individuals, which I think is great and that’s a different approach… Can you imagine anybody with these positives wouldn’t want to join?”

With a track record of being open, he said communication was “absolutely key” to regaining customer trust in the energy sector and that ELN has broken down the walls of inaccessibility.

Mr Beckers will advise the board at ELN and is keen to explore new directions and opportunities.

Sumit Bose, Editor of ELN said: “We are delighted to have Volker on board. He will bring immense experience of international business and finance to ELN and has the breadth of knowledge and insight to help us travel in new directions.

“He is also very creative in his thinking and enjoys the entrepreneurial risk taking nature of a growing company like ours. Both Geoff and I believe he is the right choice as we take ELN onto the next stage of its development.”
