The UK small wind systems market is expected to surge by nearly 200% this year after growing massively in the last four years.
A report by Renewable UK showed that the UK market is currently the second largest in the world and the biggest in Europe.
Companies building small turbines generate £17m a year and employ 1,800 people and in 2009 manufacturing exports rose 45% to £8m.
The report revealed that number of small scale installations has risen significantly in the last five years. In 2005, the number of installations generating up to 1.5kW was 862 – last year it was 11,712. In the 1.5-10kW sector, the figure rose from 155 in 2005 to 1503 in 2009. Installations generating 10-20kW numbered 13 in 2005 and 340 last year, while the figure in the 20-50kW bracket was up from 3 to 56.
