A German offshore cable project called Ostwind 1 has been approved.

The Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) gave 50Hertz gave the go-ahead for its final part of the project which covers 90km at sea and 3km on land.

It connects the Wikinger and Arkona Basin South-East wind farms to the grid.

Construction will start this summer and the grid connections are expected to be ready by the end of 2018.

Uwe Gyßer, Ostwind 1 Project Leader at 50Hertz, said: “We are greatly pleased with the permit for this last 20km section in the EEZ [Exclusive Economic Zone]. This means the entire cable route is now approved.”
