More than 310,000 customers switched energy suppliers last month.
That’s an increase from under 286,000 switches in August, new figures from Energy UK reveal.
Smaller energy suppliers gained 78,455 electricity accounts in September, accounting for 25% of all switches.
Lawrence Slade, CEO of Energy UK said: “September’s electricity switching figures are proof of a change in behaviour when it comes to switching. Customers are no longer waiting for the weather to turn.
“With 29 suppliers in the market offering a number of deals, it is worth taking the time to shop around. There are a number of tariffs on offer that are hundreds of pounds cheaper than this time last year.”
According to the government figures, UK householders are missing out on £2.2 billion worth of savings by not switching suppliers.
Ofgem today announced it has ordered Utilita Energy to pay £560,000 for blocking customers from switching to other suppliers.
