Google is investing $145 million (£89m), helping convert a former oil and gas field into a solar power plant in the US.

The 82MW Regulus solar project in Kern County in California will generate enough electricity to power 10,000 homes and support around 650 jobs. Nearly 250,000 solar panels will be fitted by SunEdison.

The new project marks 17 renewable energy investments for the internet search engine giant since 2010.

Google said in a statement: “Our investment in the Regulus solar project will give new life to a long-valued piece of land. There’s something a little poetic about creating a renewable resource on land that once creaked with oil wells.”

The facility is expected to start operation later this year.
