Petrol prices in the US last year were the lowest since 2009.

They stood at $2.43 per gallon (£1.6/gal) – 28% less than 2014, new figures from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) revealed.

It added the fall in oil prices, which ended the year at around $37 (£25) per barrel, impacted petrol.

The price of a barrel of Brent oil dropped to a 12-year low this week.

In six of the 10 cities the EIA collected information, petrol prices did not exceed $3/gal (£2).

They were Denver, Houston, Chicago, Cleveland, Boston, New York and Miami.
